Feeling a little artistic this week I dipped my toe in to the realms of stop start animation and my god it was fun. Unlike my last video my little project started properly with an idea then a story board (well scruffy stick pictures and arrows) and then the pain stacking process of taking the pictures, all 244 of them.

This is by no means a completed project, more a sample piece that is open for discussion and debate. What do you like? What don’t you like? Do you feel the video relays a message, if so what message?

A Cold Hard Slap

It’s time to suck it in and stop myself becoming lazy with the blog.

True to form I’m burning the candle at both ends, continuing to overload myself with work until eventually the work machine aka me grinds to a halt and that is just what happened a couple of weeks ago, knackered, kaput, shot, f****d, out for the count.

I have skipped music nights out with icy cold beer or whatever that fizzy stuff is The Charlotte sells, for cosy nights behind the pc doing really crappy, boring text based work for OSOM that has to be fulfilled before I can have the project funded.

One of best things to come out of my little ..shall we say .....break down was the regular conversations with a friend Rob who is one proud part of the duo robandkal.com, a brilliant and daring website allowing anybody to see and hear how their music is created step by step, even asking for the public to interact and offer their opinions both good and bad. So Rob being a talented musician and web genius (well I think he is even if he doesn’t himself) is interested in OSOM and would like to see the project do well, so we chat regularly and he just like myself is very honest and if something is rubbish he would instantly say so! During one of our regular chats Rob said something that has niggled away at me, something that is so right and is echoed through other people but indirectly, more of a murmur than a slap in the face, he said;

“I love the idea of OSOM. I’m subscribed to your blog so have usually read it before you send out the updates on Facebook, but every week I read it hoping this will be the one that explains OSOM, the one that makes it clear.”

If those words were a punch in the face I would need hospital treatment, but what really got me thinking was what he said after;

“If I’m talking to somebody and wanted to explain OSOM, tell them what OSOM is, what it’s about, I’d struggle and not know what to say because I don’t know myself.”

Cold Hard Fact is that there is no escaping from it, he was right, what’s the point in having a great product with a great purpose if people cannot simply explain it to one another. Having chewed on this thought for sometime I put pen to paper, fingers to keys and started to shine the light on OSOM and simplify the complexed project it has become, so thank you Rob, this one is for you and the many more people that were stood in your shoes.

Simply put;

OSOM is a new social website with music at heart, making it easy to find great music locally for fans in search of new music and the next big thing.

With OSOM finding music locally and promoting music locally has never been easier.

OSOM with a little more detail;

To get the most from OSOM all users will be required to sign up for a free account that will best reflect their position e.g. musician, venue, promoter, manager, fan etc. Upon registration the user will be asked to fill out various details. The information asked for will then be translated to be used in many different ways, recommending music to fans, put musicians in correct categories, venue location markers on a localised map and many many more was of simplifying all your music needs.

All users will be encouraged to express their individuality by creating personalised accounts.

These are the bare bones and the beginning of OSOM as a website, I wish for OSOM to be a people’s website and ask for feedback regarding all aspects of the idea and website asking for any thought and feeling and maybe even potential idea’s you the public would like to see. If you would like to express your thoughts or suggestions pleas send all emails to iwanttosee@oursoundourmusic.com.

Well I hope this clears some of the unanswered questions that lurk around OSOM, but if at any time I don’t make things clear please feel free to tell me and I will do my best to correct my error in later blogs.

Going Viral

This week has been one I could quite happily forget, with issues in my day job affecting everything and putting a real downer on the whole week.

I am one of many millions of people out there that dont rarely like their job, but if it was not for my dislike I might never have dedicated so much time into the creation of OSOM, so I suppose I should be thankful of that.

Anyway on with business there have been two interesting developments this week, the first of which is my conversation with the lovely Dan White. I called Dan to ask for his assistance and expertise, for those if you that don’t know Dan he is a brilliant comedy singer who writes his own material. So knowing this I called him and explained my idea of a comical song and then using that song as a viral campaign to witch he’s delighted to help with so keep a lookout for progress on that.

And the second development is something you can watch right now it’s called OSOM – The Beginning and it’s the latest addition the OSOM on YouTube. The video was created to make people simile and to have people thinking about OSOM and what it is because it looks cool. I suppose you could call it my firs viral campaign. Well have a look, show everybody, tell everybody and enjoy.

Right this is a great idea but in honesty I’m struggling to dedicate the amount of time needed for the project to run successfully. Sitting in my potion and wanting to make change I had to honestly evaluate my free time and how to divide it up for the best, after all I’m still human and need some time to myself and personal life. Having thought long and hard about what can be achieved through the individual things I have been doing the answer became clearer, concentrate on OSOM! I’m sure many of you will be disappointed with my decision but have no fear The Note Worthy Project will be incorporated into the OSOM website as soon as physically possible.

Checking Out The Competition.

For the past two weeks I have been deep in the world of discovery, looking in to the many different, interesting and sometimes exciting opportunities already available to musicians, fans and music retailers. Generally I feel that the bulk of what can be found on the internet is average and nothing much to be screaming and shouting about, but every now and then there is something almost genius, something you really should know about.

Having said that these are what I believe to be brilliant, innovative ideas that I would also consider to be good competition for when the OSOM website is launched.

Summer Sundae Fringe Festival

The Summer Sundae Fringe Festival is here again, showcasing Leicester’s talents through a series of different nights across the city and county, with a monster night on Thursday 13th August spanning 9 individual venues showcasing over 40 acts.
Tickets for Fringe Thursday, including the bus service, are only £4 and are available from: Firebug, Donkey, Rockaboom and DMH.

With a target of £6,000 to raise for Leicester and Rutland hospice every ounce of support is needed.

I’m Like The Gift That Keeps Giving

This week has been completely different to another seeing the OSOM idea thrown into the spot light and carefully analysed by myself.

Before people start talking, or worse still jumping to ideas, no I'm not shutting OSOM down and the thought has never crossed my mind, but I have been trying to better the project. Unfortunately this means completing some unbelievably boring but necessary steps in the realms of market research and the beginnings of a business plan. A professional business plan will be the concrete foundation needed for creating a strong structure for the project furthermore outlining the projects vision in a more acceptable manner.

Ooooo that sounds hellishly professional doesn’t it, I do have to admit the shear amount of information and literature needed is very overwhelming but surprisingly helpful.

Why have I chosen to walk this path?
Honestly, I’m sick to death of approaching people about the project and its potential just to receive that glazed look you get from the dog when you tell it how your days been? The project will never be taken seriously unless I also take it seriously and can prove that the home work has been done.

Oh my mother will be so proud, her little boy is all grown up now ..lol

The Note Worthy Project
Well the project has now been successfully going for 2/3 weeks, there have also been plenty of hiccups along the way so ill start from the top, the CD is complete minus tag lines. This was a hard decision to make but to have the music in circulation was the key aspect and the main goal.

Having looked at what went wrong with the taglines I have chosen to alter the initial idea slightly by creating a radio jingle/movie trailer introduction to the project and the individual locations, but still want to have artists introduce themselves and their music, this is because I want character and personality of the individual artists to shine through.

Right so where is The Note Worthy Project Playing? that is a very good question.
Venues/locations actively playing the Note Worthy CD are;

• Walkabout
• Melting Pot (entertainment nights)
I wish to have Sophbeck involved but the gentleman I need to talk to have eluded me for some time now but is now farther to a little new baby so I wish him all the best and will try and sort something out when the time is right and he is settled down.

New Events/Gigs Around Leicester
Just an update for all you gig happy fans, there are two new nights that I know of that have popped up in the last couple of weeks.

The first is LE1 Live down at the Walkabout bar, the guys down there are very keen to create an established live music night on every Tuesday.

Second is a night hosted by Stevie Jones and Mark Gill down at the Musician, there good honest love for music also shows in the musicians that accompany them on stage, bringing to light even more local talent I never know was there!

Bits Running Around My Head
I have this feeling that’s turning into a need to record a video blog in the near future partly because it’s something new and something I have never done before but I also believe I would be quite nice for people to hear me and listen to my words instead of reading them. Maybe this may encourage people, that like me have dyslexia and struggle reading and spelling or the people that don’t have time to read then all they will have to do is listen.

Its time to hit the mountain of information that my printer has just spat out ……. The average person spends 32.7 hours a week on the internet ……… see so many facts to reinforce the OSOM vision, time to get the highlighter.

The Feeling You Have To Fight

I’d like to start this week by saying hello and welcome to all the new people reading this blog and thanks for joining us. If your reading this blog for the first time and are thinking to yourself, what the hell is this crazy guy talking about and what the hell is he going on about, here is a little summary of OSOM:

OSOM was created to bring awareness to the vast amounts of local musical talent that lies right beneath our nose, giving a voice to the small and unsigned artist/s allowing them the recognition and respect they deserve.
OSOM is not just for the new and unsigned artist/s, we would like to also welcome the lucky artists who make a living in music, recording studios, musical suppliers and most importantly the DIE HARD MUSIC FANS!

And if that got you hooked I suggest you have a read of the earlier blogs filled with more information.

Back to this weeks blog, well its going to be one you can all closely associate with whether you’re a singer, dancer, teacher, accountant we all seem to hit rock bottom some time and the feelings are always the same.

As I have stated before OSOM is a hobby, something I do to help, to potentially make things better for groups, bands, shops, venues, then during the day I work for the council. My rock bottom came last week after having the best ever birthday week away with my adorable fiancé. As we were camping there was always going to be no way of becoming engulfed in yet more work on my holiday and as Nicola quite rightly tells me ‘you need to switch off some times’ so I did.
The week away, the weather, the location, the company it all was amazing and so enjoyable and I thoroughly enjoyed doing nothing.

I do have to admit thought I did fall force to the power of music when the old guy across from us started playing a harmonica and in true Adam fashion I was right over there encouraging the old guy to play more. Having wanted a musical instrument and having already thought about a harmonica this was the perfect opportunity to purchase one, so I did.
Tangent over back to where I was…….

When we arrived back home I was overwhelmed with the thought of what was soon to come ……..work! My day job is not great at the best of times and it’s only the people I work with that make it bearable.
This feeling started to take over everything; I just didn’t want to do anything including working on OSOM. I dedicated so much time and effort in to OSOM and other project and at times it feels like a thankless job that leaves me wondering why?

I hate this feeling that sort of dark negativity that creeps in and explodes in to everything all at once. It’s like being at the point of no return or the fork in the road that life happens to throw at us every now and then, the decisions that make us what we rely are.

I have respect for any body at the same challenging cross roads whether its students taking exams or revising, new business struggling in the turbulent financial times or even the most over looked people parents struggling to take care of their families.

I’m a firm believer that anything is possible for anybody, it’s the attitude, motivation and self belief that determines whether you succeed or not and I’m sure as hell am not going to lose.
So I will continue to wage the war for local music and keep fighting the OSOM way, then next week we will go in to my addiction to Facebook fan pages and how I plan using them in the real world.

This blog is about the OSOM venture, the good and the bad, I feel that unless you truly understand what goes on within OSOM then people will not become interested and really love the OSOM venture.

The Tooth Fairy Wasted My Day

I’d like to start this week by saying a big thank you to Dutch Courage for last weeks insight to the band and their involvement with the NHS campaign.

This week I was to take a wonder down to Quad Studios in Leicester to have a look at their facilities and what they have on offer for local musicians, but unfortunately I had to make and emergency visit to the dentist.

My little experience with the dentist managed to mess up the whole day so I will give you the details I know, then fill in the blanks when I manage to make a visit to Quad Studios.

I came across Quad Studios because of their involvement with Leicester’s NHS Teen Pregnancy Campaign, in the same was I discovered Dutch Courage.

Quad Studios supplied the facilities to visually record parts of the NHS campaign, these can be seen in the many short episodes featured on their YouTube Group.

I do not know the history behind Quad Studio but I do know they have seven well equipped rehearsal rooms and a one recording studio.

What really has me interested is how they came to be involved with such a large NHS campaign.

Talking Sex With Dutch Courage

This week’s blog is a little different, giving you an entertaining insight into one of Leicester’s unknown bands.

In the previous blog I was encouraging you all to get out and try something new and look at new forms of exposure for music. One of the groups/organisations I can personally recommend is LineOut, an amateur film society dedicated to creating feature films, short films and even music videos, so I strongly recommend taking five minuets out of your busy day and having a look.

Right then on to the lowdown and gossip from Dutch Courage:

So then guys nice to actually meet you, let’s start with introductions, who’s who, how old and what do you play?

I’m Phil Blackler I’m 17 and I play Bass and sing lead vocals

I’m Joe Humphries I’m 17 and I bang the drums and sing

I’m Ollie Griffin I’m 17 and I play Rhythm and I’m not allowed to sing...

I’m Tom Gooding I’m 17 and I play lead guitar and sing

How long has the band been together?

P.B: we’ve been together as Dutch Courage for about 18 months but we mucked about as a 5 piece for a bit before we started to get serious.

So then guys I have to ask, who is the drunk of the group and did they come out with the name.

J.H. To be honest, I think the drink tends to get shared out pretty evenly between us guys!

O.G: well, going on last night’s performance I’d have to say Tom is the drunk of the group. He should take a few tips from me in the future, I was much more respectable.

How on earth did a young group like yourselves get involved with a teen pregnancy campaign fronted by the NHS?

J.H. We were lucky enough to be found on MySpace by a local promotions company who asked us to audition for the part. The audition must have gone okay because they asked us back.

O.G: I heard that they were told to choose the best looking band.

So it wasn’t a drunken experience with some sexy groupies gone wrong?

J.H. Kind of more like how to be safer whilst having drunken experiences eh Phil

O.G: Phil, you’re the one that gets all the girls in this band, I reckon your antics had something to do with it.

What was it like being involved in the NHS campaign?

T.G. It was good to do something different, we felt quite important, and also we got a free pizza which is always good!

P.B it was a very different experience for us because we'd never done anything like that before. All the filming was done really well and the whole thing was written and directed brilliantly. We spent the day there doing our bit and the actors were all a good laugh to be around. We had to give one of the actors, Rav, a 10 minute quick fire guitar lesson to make him look as though he had any musical expertise whatsoever - that was fun!

O.G: It gave us a real insight into what it would be like to have to film a music video and the time it takes

Have you gained anything from the whole experience, or are you all just more clued up on the acts of safe sex?

O.G: You gained a few extra numbers for your phone didn't you Phil from some of the extras

T.G And Ollie you learnt its best to use a condom didn’t you?

Ha ha well thank you lads it’s been a pleasure and I look forward to hearing you live and good luck for the future.

The Note Worthy Project

Well this is still going ahead but I have almost given up on having a deadline date as every time I make one it gets waylaid by some sort of issues I didn’t expect. Having said that The Note Worthy Project CD sound be finished this week lol

Looking Through New Doors To Find New Opportunities

This week’s blog is a little of the beaten track and not all about what I have been up to within the week, but a little bit about other hidden outlets for local music that you might not have thought about, but could still be very valuable nevertheless.

So What Are You Not Doing

As you well know music is added to everything, shops, gyms, shopping centres, cinemas, bars the list is endless but have you ever thought about armature film societies?

Leicester has a thriving film society that pulls together all types of enthusiast that want to create individual works of art; all of these films, unless silent will use music to complement and highlight various aspects of their film.

This has two major benefits;

First; the director will be promoting their film and at the same time promoting your music, not only will it be played in the film but shown in the credits.

Second; if you are polite, friendly and punctual the odds are that they will recommend you and your music to other directors, other film enthusiasts and you can well find your music appearing on more and more films.

If I still haven’t got you convinced this is a worthy path to walk, I urge you to take time out to watch the latest campaign from Leicester NHS regarding teen pregnancy and the much talked about ‘banned YouTube video'.

The campaign has been created using music from local band Dutch Courage, a four piece from Market Bosworth formed in early 2008.

The campaign features there music heavily across the six episodes that follow along like a local soap opera on YouTube.

Next week I will have Dutch Courage answering questions about how they got involved in the NHS campaign, what they think about the campaign and just generally digging up the dirt and maybe a little bit of gossip.

This Weeks Workload

Well this week just like every other has been cram packed with hard work but I don’t seem to see the fruits of my labour so clearly this week.

I have The Note Worthy Project CD’s and case covers printed and had hoped the project would have been rolled out this week but as with music all was and still is not as easy as it seems. I still however want the first CD out ASAP but only time will tell.

I have also had more meetings with Demon FM and there exposure team, this is looking very promising something to look forward to in the future.

The thing that made me smile most this week has been the phenomenal performance of the slightly strange provocative form of griller marketing I started about four weeks ago, ‘Sexy Underwear’. The group has excelled this week hitting 1,500+ new fans a day moving from 6,000 members at the beginning of the week to 17,000+ buy the end of the week.

Well I think that’s it for today, I have just received a copy of Dreamweaver and I’m now off to play around with website idea’s and designs.

Working With A Demon

Phew we….. That’s it, officially I am exhausted.

When I had originally put a completion time of four weeks on ‘The Note Worthy Project’ I now see that might have been a little optimistic.

However the project is going incredibly well and is almost complete, only one week behind which is astounding when I look at the greater scale of things, but I still feel a little annoyed at myself for not completing on time.

For me not managing to finish within the time scale leaves me feeling like I have let other people down, let myself down.

I have to continually tell myself that this is not a business, I might like to run OSOM like a business but in reality it is more of an extreme hobby that takes over a lot of my spare/free time. So considering the above to arrive one week short to a dead line I feel a little better.

The Note Worthy Project Update

Well I you read above the project is almost completed and all going well will be handed out on Monday 22^nd June to three participating locations, O-Bar, Hub Bar

and Sophbeck (still needs to be finalised).

The idea of tag-lines has proven rather tricky to obtain and has hindered the process, so to rectify the problem I’m going to be laying down some temporary vocal tag-lines.

This is not what I want and believe one of the most unique aspects of the project was the personalised tag-lines from the various artist and locations so for them not to be compiled with the CD is upsetting.

Taking a huge step forward I have been in contact with the many great people down at Demon FM and was honoured when Aimee Morrison invited me on as a guest on her show to explain about the OSOM idea and ultimately The Note Worthy Project. Bright and early on Friday 5^th June I was with Aimee on the Easy Riser show from eight till nine and it was brilliant, a real eye opener and a great pleasure to meet some body who takes great pride in the presentation, performance and quality of their show.

There are plans to continually work with the guys and galls down at Demon FM to help the local music scene.

The Note That Really Is Worthy

Again this week has been true to form, tremendously active and has brought life to Leicester’s newest addition to a local musician’s promotional toolkit 'The Note Worthy Project'.

Yes yes yes I know that sounds nothing like Ear forever, Right Ear Right Now, Easy Listener, or the many other idea’s I had previously had and posted in my blog, but that was the trail of thought I was walking at the time.

New title The Note Worthy Project how did it come to life?

Well the name actually came from a work colleague (David), I had explained my idea to him for part of a logo using a musical note and the names I had come up with around that, things such as; Personal Note - Note Perfect – Ear My Notes – The Local Note – Note Listening –
Leicester Note – My Note To You.
David then said ‘what about note worthy, that’s a recognised phrase’ the more I started to look and analyze it the more it seemed to be perfect, and so Note Worthy was named and branded, time for a logo.

One part of the logo I had in mind, the bit I really had my mind set on was a musical note (quaver). That image would then be altered to hold a collage of other images inside the note, these images were going to be all local bands, groups, fans, gigs etc.

I was keen to use the image of a quaver because of its multi cultural and multi lingual capabilities, by this I mean any person male or female of any age of any country would be able to associate the image with music and for that image to be filled with the music fruits of Leicester was intended to be personalised to the city.

My intensions for the retro wallpaper background is to show the contrast between new, old and current, I also like the symmetry and striking bold colours you consistently get in retro designs.

So where will I hear The Note Worthy Project?

As this is still a relatively new idea I am trilling the project in only a hand full of venues for market research. Once I have collected data and feedback from the select locations the project will be reworked and the creases ironed out.

The venues will include O-Bar, Hub Bar and Sophbeck (this one is still to be finalised). I have also set the wheels in motion with Leicester's newest public attraction the Highcross Shopping Centre, by this I mean I have taken steps to find the individual who I will need to set up a meeting with to discuss the matter further.

When will the project be launched?

Working with bands will never be the easiest of tasks on my agenda so my initial outlook of four weeks may be stretched to five and a half weeks.

The music has and still is being collected, the tag-lines are well non existent at the minute and it looks like I will have to temporally record them myself, so the grand finale for the project is to compile the tracks on the first ever Note Worthy CD.

This is where my sound man Nick Rose and his very new company Raindrop Records comes in, we will sit-down and work the music and tag-lines in to a compilation fit for distribution to the select venues.

Keeping Leicester Alive With Music

The Week Of Work

This week has been all about my latest project that I still have to name........yes I still don’t have a name. The truth is, I'm working flat out and my body needs to sleep for some crazy reason, ludicrous I know!

What names do I have on the drawing bored?
Well despite not having picked a name or even a logo I have had plenty of ideas playing around with the English language and similarities in words such as ear and hear. Having said that these are the names that have been put onto paper to play around with:

- Ear forever - Right Ear Right Now - Easy Listener - Living As A Local -
- Ear A Little, Like A Lot - Fallen On Local Ears - Listen Ear - Ear Support -

As you can tell I'm a little stuck on the idea of using ear ha ha, so other than finding out the many different ways I can use the word ear, what else have I been up to? Well I have been getting stuck in to contacting the local musicians through email, social networking and the trusted telephone/mobile. Then explaining the project and getting as many on board as possible.

For those of you reading this and thinking ‘what the hell is he on about’ here is a copy of the email I'm sending around to musicians:

“Hello, I’m Adam Breedon and I’m running a group called OSOM, the aim is to get the interest back in to Leicester's local music scene. The project I’m working on now is aimed at getting local music into places you as a band/artist would never be able to play e.g. shops, bars etc. I’m going to do this by compiling CD’s that individual venues will have to play through their PA systems, and these CD’s will be changed every week.
One of the other really nice things being incorporated into the CD is ‘tag lines’ from the bands e.g. ‘hi we are ………. And this is our new single ………. And you’re listing in the one and only ………’

So I would like to know if you’re interested in jumping on board.
Everyone involved in the project including myself make no money from this and the CD’s will not be sold to the different venues.
This is purely for getting the music back out there and getting the interest back into the local music scene.”

The responses have been phenomenal to say the least and nobody has actually said no, some have been a little dubious and hesitant in entrusting me with their music but gradually have come round to the idea after hearing of the many other musicians already actively involved in the project.

As things stand the project is on track, running to schedule and the first phase shall be completed within two to two and a half weeks, playing in local venues around Leicester.
More details to follow next week including the processes and my amazing sound engineer Nick Rose and his newly established recording company Raindrop Records.
Well that’s it for now, its back off to chase up bands and then a little more chasing up lol.

StayFree & Have Fun

It feels strange to be blogging again after a week away but on the other hand in a odd and peculiar way it’s nice to be back, nothing quit like the stresses of work and the feeling of being shoulder deep in work, its what we all live for isn’t it …… i think not.

Now with the bollocks bit out the way lets crack on, a lot has happened in the weeks that have passed, my adventure to StayFree Music, the new OSOM project and some strange ways of creating interest and a collective database of people.

I would just like to add due to my amazing fiancé

(that I’d be lost with out) we now have FISH woo hoo. The dopey little things are not the most energetic pets I have ever had, nor do they fetch sticks or scare burglars away, but they are very therapeutic and sort of calming, fifteen minutes of watching them bob about the aquarium aimlessly makes me feel shattered and glad I’m not a fish ha-ha back to the blog.

StayFree Music

Not being a musician, rehearsal rooms are places I’ve only dreamed about screaming down a mic and bouncing round with a band, so having booked a day and time to visit StayFree Music I

was needless to say, EXCITED.

StayFree Music has an impressive nine rehearsal rooms, one recording studio and additional rooms for resident musicians to lease out. Having provided Leicester with rehearsal facilities for over fifteen years, StayFree Music has accumulated a large amount of valuable knowledge in their chosen music sector which makes them a formidable contender amongst other competitors.

Arriving early I searched for the door and found a car park, but no door, one quick call and another walk around I found the smallest white doorbell with the righting “StayFree Music” hidden in an entrance archway.

When the door open I was greeted with a smile and immediately felt welcome by Caroline Wright, the thing I notice most and keep consistently seeing with StayFree it’s the wonderful, sociable and joyful faces that work in, around and behind the scenes making all feel welcome and undoubtedly contributing to their success.

Within the large building at the top of the stairs is the reception/front desk, with a notice board on the wall littered with flyers, posters, and all sorts of musical information that you can’t help but have a quick look at.

All nine of the rooms are individually numbered and all distinctively different in colour, size and appearance, making the rooms easy to remember. I would go in to detail and talk about differences within each room, but as all are so different and with rooms like ‘target room’ and the ‘stage room’ seeing them is a must and highly

recommended.

The hire charge will vary for the different rooms, but with prices from £5 - £12 an hour it’s worth every penny spent especially in the stage room!

StayFree music is moving all nine rehearsal rooms and recording studio to the larger more impressive building located down towards Frog Island at the end of May. Keeping the StayFree vibe, colour coordinated rooms and terrific staff it’s going to be bigger and better than ever. But it gets even better, with the addition of a social room where fellow musicians can purchase drinks including alcohol, sit and then chat freely before and after sessions

during the day, StayFree will again be more uniquely different than before. But the icing on the cake has to be the arrival of Leicester’s newest venue ‘Lock 42’ located in the new StayFree premises and in partnership with Andy Wright the previous manager of The Charlotte, ‘Lock 42’ has huge potential and the venues opening night will be one to look out for in November.

New Marketing Idea’s

Just before I went away for the week I started two new fan pages, the first one is to become a fan of music and the second one is become a fan of sexy underwear.

Sexy underwear I hear you saying, well you will not be the first person to think this and you will not be the last.

So why have a starter a group not related to music; the answer is because the human race as a hole is very fickle and lazy (me included) if what I want is not in front of me or very easy to access I tend not to dig deep but move quickly on. So sex always sells and has people reading, I see it as standing in the middle of a busy street and shouting SEX and then when I have people’s attention and only then, giving them the information I want them to know. A little sly and devious I know but you never know unless you try.

Music in Local Places

Recently I have been working on a small project which has great potential to give local musicians exposure in

places they never thought possible, small bars, shops, takeaways etc. The project as it stands today is still called ‘my music thingy’ but I’m quickly working on a catchy and distinctive name and logo. Working closely with Arts In Leicester and Speaks Volumes ‘the music thingy’ has quickly picked up momentum and is continually stirring up interest. Next weeks blog will have more details about the project.

The recession is biting even the best of us in the arse and with more of us looking for cheaper alternative forms of entertainment I suggest you look no further than Dan Whites Comedy Nights at the Shed. With cheap admission, cheapish drinks live music and cans of beer for only £2 it’s a steal at half the price.

A word of warning before I go any further, the comedy nights are very much over 18’s and not for the easily offended.

I thought for the first time ever I was going arrive fashionably late for an 8pm gig poling up at 7:55ish, but no it turned out that fashionably late for an 8pm gig was actually 8:30.

The night started at 8:30 and first to be introduced to the stage was Lilly Clay and her acoustic songs, written about personal experiences. I wouldn’t call her work comedy music but at the same time she has some very funny lyrics with in her songs. Young Lilly looked confident at the front and has a very tender almost innocent voice that I loved. The one thing I did not like was the stuttering style of singing she ever so easily slipped in to during songs; Lilly you have a beautiful voice just sing.

Then came Camel, a tall, thin, long haired quirky guy that leapt into action with a smile and a bounce in his step. Surprisingly Camel is not on MySpace, Facebook or the internet anywhere, which being a comedy man I thought he was taking the piss, but no I was wrong, I think there is a phone box to call if you want him, lol. Camels music is mainly funny cover songs, but his one song about necrophilia will have you doubled over with laughter, then you quickly stop and have to question your sanity.

Bad Axe well, tie up your grannies, hide your daughters and walk away …. no runaway if you’re easily offended because Bad Axe ‘don’t give a fuck!.’ With songs like Barrack Obama Got F*cked By A Friendly Lama and Cliff Richard's Arsehole you know your in for a explicit, no holes bared night of comedy not for the fainthearted. The three piece band from Nottingham are definitely not fashion icons nor are they good role models for children or even adults for that matter, but they are devilishly funny and incredibly entertaining. Having shouted at people and for walking in front of them, blocked up a door and bang the roof with nearby stools screaming ‘shut the fuck up’ I have to say I was a little hesitant to go to the toilet. When I finally made a break for the toilet and started to pee I found to my amazement the Bad Axe bass player screaming to the guy he had just followed in ‘fucking pee you cunt, fucking pee’ and amazingly still playing his bass guitar, photo opportunity and one for the blog. I will be seeing Bad Axe again and I strongly suggest you do to.

Finally it was the birthday boy’s time to shine, celebrating his 22nd Dan White took to the stage a little intoxicated for the beginning of his comedy set. I have said this before but I’m going to say it again, the comical magic Dan brings to the stage is tremendously hilarious and childish. His laid back folk take to music really works then put into the mix his crystal clear vocals and simple but catchy melodies and you have a very talented comedy musician that will have you singing about sticking your hand up your bum in no time.

Another night at the shed for a music junkie like me, I’m starting to

notice the light podge beginning to form due to all the beer!

My Beer even began speaking to me.

Well the night, I was invited along by Nick Rose from the band The Truth. Having spoken to Nick on many different occasions and bumped in to him at Sumo, I was honoured at the invite.

Again we arrived early and everybody else arrived fashionably late of course. The first thing that struck me as odd was the amount of foreign people pottering around inside. I soon found out that the head liner Stereo Grand was the Belgium winners of the 2009 Nouvelle Vague.

Phase 4 started the night with a bang, if you have never seen Phase 4 perform the first thing you will notice is the amount of members in the group, secondly is the slightly strange array of musical instruments to bring to the stage. Trumpets and trombones are not everybody’s idea of punk music, but once you listen to the rocky, ska punk music Phase 4 deliver you will be fighting the urge to jazz everything up with a bit of brass. The bouncy, youthful funk rock that quickly filled the air was amazing, reminding me of Less Than Jake. A cracking start to the night from another young and talented Leicester band.

Then came an addition to the line up The Soul Smiths, I don’t know much about the band, the music was very varied through each individual song and the vocals were great, over all some good music.

Smokin' The Profit is a well know and confident five piece band that are familiar with the lime light. The first major difference when listening to the band is the quality of the live performance which over shadows anything I had heard on MySpace prior to the night. Smokin' The Profit is as punk as you get and their enthusiasm for music shows right through the performance, a good Leicester punk band.

This is where I began to lose the plot, in the little world of Adam that I live in 95% of the time, a headliner band plays last? So when the head lining Stereo Grand took to the stage I was a little puzzled but didn’t mind as that left the space free for The Truth to play.

So on to the stage came the Belgium band Stereo Grand, all dressed in different items of red and black clothing they became visually distinctive, their presence and attitude on stage was of confidence and a strong belief in themselves and their music. Their music was great, I love how people talk with a foreign twang but sing so English. The use of mixers throughout their set was good to but just went on to long and the songs became a little to samey.

This was the moment me and Nicola had waited for all night, so desperately waiting to hear The Truth play, then the headliners started packing away the equipment so we all sat around for a not so impressive 30 minutes. I don’t know why it worked out the way it did, but I did come away with the knowledge that its best left as the headliner plays LAST!

The Truth is the most diverse group of folks I have had the honour of watching, there is no fashion style that the members stick to, all dressing how they feel most comfortable and all driven by the joint belief that music is the one true language of the world. Performing both cover tracks and their own material The Truth will have you feeling great, feeling like a real musical warrior. The lead vocalist Chrissie has an amazingly powerful voice that has to be admired and throw Deven into the mix for ‘Insecurity’ and you have one hell of a catchy song. You can’t help but become infected by the feel good factor The Truth bring to the stage, the musical warriors struck again, even receiving a memorable helping hand from Stereo Grand on backing vocals.

Fallen In A Boobytrap

Band of the land has again lived up to its name, bringing a further five outstanding bands under one roof for three hours of musical perfection that fell on waiting ears.

Having readily arrived early at The Shed once more, me and Nicola had the honour of standing like two sore thumbs in amongst the sea of band members that littered the floor.

Huddling up in small groups, nattering and drinking away the five bands segregated themselves from one another. Standing tightly together in their comfy surroundings, all five bands looked as if they were subconsciously preparing for war, a musical war to be precise.

Pickpockets hit the stage first, the young four piece band from Leicester kicked off the night with their bouncy and youthful style of music.

Leading from the front with Omar on guitar and vocals, Jon laying down the funky rifts, Glenn bringing in the base and the crash of cymbals comes from Dave drumming away at the back.

Due to a last minute drop out the Pickpockets had a mere four hours notice prior to the gig starting and still they left a memorable impression on me, a band with potential for the future.

The Heist is a newly formed band to Leicester’s music seen and one with a difference. I know very little about the group and I don’t believe they are even on MySpace yet, but boy you know when you see them perform.

Using long forgotten instruments such as a tambourine and a stylish hand drum give the Heist a distinctly different sound, but the real power of the group comes from their lead singer who has an amazing voice that just has to be heard to be appreciated!

Being one member short Hotel Zulu stepped out of their rock shoes and into a more acoustic set allowing Dominic’s vocals to truly shine through.

Hotel Zulu are a well gelled band that thrives off of each others energy and banter, which when brought together produces a vey enjoyable performance.

With and epic vocal guitar fill from Dominic and a Tenacious D Tribute cover that had the whole Shed singing along.

The Waits are a small three piece band from Coalville with a big addictive indie sound. From the start this band will have your ears attentively listening, with radio worthy music you just can’t help but be impressed by. I was thoroughly im

prested with ‘What Goes Around’ and ‘Boys And Girls’ two truly outstanding songs that still to this day have me singing in the most unusual of places, all in all a great band you definitely wouldn't regret seeing.

The Boobytraps had the honour of playing last and no sooner has they taken to the stage the floor was crowed

with booby shaking, bum wiggling booby fans both male and female, all screaming and wanting a booby party.

For arelatively new band The Boobytraps have a large, dedicated following and with songs like ‘My Town’ it’s easy to see why. For a funky upbeat indie band the Boobytraps look surprisingly calm and relaxed on stage, one of Leicester's great bands that are a joy to listen to.

Before the votes were counted Richard (the event organiser) asked me to come up on stage and explain what OSOM was all about. Having not touched a mike or even stood on a stage since my acting days many many moons ago, I was overjoyed at the opportunity and quickly became a complete mess and bag of energy and just didn’t know what the hell to do with myself, so true to form I just talked and talked and talked ha ha Think that’s the last time I'll be asked up on stage lol.

Taking second place and having a well deserved second chance to make the final was The Waits.

It Was All White On The Night

Silver Bullet Promotions

(At The Sun Bar)

Silver bullet promotions at the sun bar is where I ventured this week in search of my much needed musical medicine.

Looking at the music line up I found my self getting quit excited, four new bands and the opportunity to whiteness the sun bar in a different light.

Past experiences in the sun bar have been err ….. Shit, ill be honest, this would be mainly down to a minority of people that have a habit of wondering in looking for trouble.

But I have to say I have more confidence in the new owners and also I admire their move in to live entertainment, and more so that is sourced locally through will at silver bullet promotions.

as a bar its not band, plenty of space, a small stage buy the entrance, pool table at the back, the staff are very friendly and if you like eastenders you will get on well with the young lady behind the bar who seeks her daily fix of soaps operas on the large flat screen behind the bar.

With the first band on at 8pm we arrived for about 7:15pm expecting sit down with a drink and see Rainy Days, Great Imitation, Your False Calling and Dead Centre Fold but that wasn’t to be. Due to complications the new revised and last minuet line up was Tony Alles, Dead Centre Fold, Your False Calling, Ben Johnson and Dan White.

Tony Alles started the night off with a great acoustic blues set but disappeared shortly after.

The stage was then left free for the very political Dead Centre Fold and Your False Calling who are best described as a skar/punk bands.

Ben Johnson took to the stage to lay down a terrific acoustic performance, whit his distinctively different vocals, definitely impressed me.

Finally came Dan White’s amazingly funny and memorable performance, if you have never whiteness the comical magic Dan brings to the stage then your in for a treat. From start to finish you will be wriggling around your seat with laughter listening to his jolly comical, adult and occasionally explicit lyrics.

With inspiration coming from his own experiences and strange thoughts, Dan has everything to become one of the great musical comedians right down to the crazy skull like face paint across half of his face and only 21 years of age.

Seeing its believing with Dan, and you just have to love him one you have seen him.

Flowing up on last weeks contacted with ‘The Tavern’ pub on Narborough Road in Leicester, Debra the new owner sound to be genuinely interested in regular live music acts performing in the venue. Debra explained to me that she was looking for acoustic sets and small music performances but nothing to heavy, I am still to visit the venue, have a look around and have a deeper decision whit Debra about her aims and motivations.

Right well that’s all for now but next weeks blog will be a big one as there are many things going on.

Standing still in the small, darkened downstairs gig room at Sumo, me and Nicola stood. Waiting patiently with a drink in hand, surrounded by like minded people, all looking forward, all waiting in anticipation for the sound of the first cords to rip through Sumo’s dingy air.

Then it hits you, first it’s the bass that wallow’s and throb’s, moving the lightest of hairs on both your neck and arms, triggering the tingle that appears at the base of your spine. Followed swiftly by the hip moving rifts that your body finds hard to deny and the tell tale foot tapping that promptly moves into the well known head nod. Finally comes the much needed vocals and catchy chorus lyrics, allowing the lips to fleetingly move, briefly allowing even spectators to be part of the music, part of the atmosphere, part of Leicester’s music scene.

Heat two of ‘Band Of The Land’ down at Sumo on the 26th March 2009 filled me with the confidence and optimism of OSOM’s success in helping the many talented bands and musicians of Leicestershire.

The night was kicked off superbly with The Fased taking to the stage for the first set followed by The Heros, Mas Fina, The Penney Hangers and finishing the night with Roxum.

A battle of bands, a clash of tightens and the underdogs Mas Fina taking a well deserved win with their new take on modern music, superb vocals and amazing scratch artist mixing it up. Mas Finas music is definitely worth listening to and a band showing great potential for the future, one I would love to see again. However I was a little disappointed with the similarity of rifts, tempo and overall predictable movement within their songs.

Runner-up moving in to the play off heats to take a second bite of the cherry was The Penny Hangers who looked very comfortable on stage and produced a great tight indie set, one to be proud of and a pleasure to watch.

The band I enjoyed the most had to be Roxum with their unique style of energetic, up-tempo, catchy melodies and funky alternative style. These guys were an absolute joy to watch, clearly displaying their dedication to music.

Social Networking

I am always tittering away behind the scenes on the social networking side of OSOM, and this week has been no different.
MySpace friends have continued to swiftly grow to a respectable 1600+ and the Facebook group ‘Keeping Leicester Alive With Music’ has expanded to 140+ members. Bebo, god I need help with this one lol, still to find a friend, I’m not throwing in the towel just yet but I would not say no to some Bebo advice!
I’m still trying to find a willing artist to profile through a Squidoo lenses so have made minimal progress with that.

Venues

I was contacted by the new owner of ‘The Tavern’ pub on Narborough Road in Leicester, who has shown a keen interest in local music playing or even practicing on their premises. I will be going down soon to check out the size and space within ‘The Tavern’ and to find out more about her idea’s and working with the local music.

This week and the last have been some what crazy to say the least, long days, even longer nights and no playing on the X-box! But I could not be happier with the results and the amount of support that the OSOM venture is creating along the way.

The past two weeks have been all about creating the interest through social networking, updates, groups and blogs, letting all you guys (and girls) know what OSOM is all about and slowly but surely all the pieces of the puzzle are coming together.

I was left hanging on the edge of my seat, waiting to find out who had won!

The five amazing bands that played the stage that night deserved a larger turnout, but with a good atmosphere every band managed to exceed their 20 minute set time, and kept Richard (the event organiser) on his toes.

Every band played superbly and deserved their 20 minute set on the stage, but there was to be only one winner, ‘Formal Warning’ who put and an energetic, entertaining and dazzling aerial display.

Runner up, was ‘Wayward Trippers’ with their great acoustic set and amazing vocalist Alex Brodella deserving a second shot and going through to the semi-final for the chance to play in the finals.

But there was one band that grabbed my attention, the young but incredibly talented, four piece ‘Astromaniacs’ from Countesthorpe College. I was impressed with the professionalism and dedication to their music.

What To Expect Next

O my god this is a hard one to answer because there are so many things happening all of the time.

If I hade to put my finger on 2 or 3 things then they would be;

1. Create and publish the first ever OSOM Squidoo Lenses

2. Find more friends on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and most importantly Bebo (as I don’t have any friends lol)

3. More ideas for the OSOM web page design.

It’s All About Little Old Me This Time

Well well here we are again, I would like to start by saying thank you to all of the people that have taken the time to read ‘The Music you Never Knew Was There’, if you haven’t its archived so there is no excuse ha ha.

Well I better start by elaborating on the vague introduction in my previous blog.
For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Adam Breedon; I’m 24, I live in Leicester and am happily engaged to my lovely fiancé Nicola a.k.a the biggest love in my life but also the biggest pain in my ass (she knows I love her.)

I had the idea for OSOM (or ‘my idea’ as it was called back then) in November of 2008, before the closure of ‘The Charlotte’ in Leicester and I made a promise to myself to read at least 3 books a month. These books then fuelled my hunger to create a music database unlike any other. After getting slightly addicted to reading (which for a dyslexic person doesn’t happen often) I finally settled on a name/acronym I was happy with, I then began creating logos and purchasing web space.

The first logo was created using 38 separate layers in Photoshop and was the best thing since sliced bread, until everyone I showed, criticised it 'too childish, can’t understand it, what does it say', so it was back to the drawing board or computer screen in my case.

Criticism tends to get me down, but I feel I have more of a point to prove, a bigger goal to achieve. So I take it on board and create something bigger, something better.

On attempt number 5 (I think) the OSOM logo was finalised, something I was happy with, something I was proud of. By this time the Leicester Mercury announced on the 15 January 2009 The Charlottes troubles and the possibility of its closure.

It was time to put the small OSOM wheels into motion, to help create the interest in the Leicester’s music scene.

OSOM then introduced ‘Keeping Leicester Alive With Music’ a small FaceBook group, that has been kept up-to-date with news and my progress, but it didn’t go as well as I thought it would. I think it was more to do with me not knowing what the hell I was doing. I mean Facebook can be so bloody annoying sometimes, add this, add that, send a present, throw a snowball arrrrrrrrr (sorry rant over with promise).
So having caught the social networking bug I went back to my old roots MySpace and within 2 weeks I hit the 1000 friends mark. I have listened to more music than ever before and have discovered more about local bands than I ever knew before.
Well that’s that and here we are to the present day banging the OSOM idea home day after day, looking forward to the completion of the OSOM website.

I would just like to add aswell, this is not a money spin, I don’t earn anything from this and nobody pays me (think I'm mental). I will be looking for sources of income through things such as add sense to better the webpage and future plans and ideas that OSOM will bring to the table.

Now I've fed you all with the boring bits I promise NEVER to do it again ha ha

The Music You Never Knew Was There

I have been trying to write the first ever OSOM blog for about a week so here goes.

I hope you all enjoy.

Leicester as a city is just like any other, we have the local drunks that loiter about on the streets causing no harm, the business men and women in their suits travelling from A to B, the groups of chavs talking about what ever it is chavs talk about, the grungy moshers with their masses of facial hair and long locks.

But what is it that makes Leicester a special city?

For me it sure as hell isn’t the government, the councils or the new John Lewis department store. It lies deeper in the cultures of the city, the art and the artists, the plays and the thespians, but for me it’s the music and the musicians that lay almost dormant unless you know where to look.

Now this is where I should fill your head with facts and figures to reinforce what I’m saying but I wont, instead I will fill your heads with just two (as of March 2009).

Leicester has bean voted one of the top 5 musical cities in the county
Leicester is home to 200 + bands and artists

I can almost hear the sharp gasp of air at the thought of 200+ bands with in the city and shire, shortly followed by ‘well where are they then’ and the answer to the question, right beneath your nose, all you have to do is look.

This is why I have created and started the OSOM venture, to bring more of a public awareness to the huge amount of talented musicians the city has to offer the country, and even the world. To harness all the information about local resources, then to supply a refined, simplified easy to use v

ersion for the public, the bands, venues, for all who wish to see and know about local music.

OSOM will work closely with the bands and artists, work with the public and media to bring Leicester back to the forefront of the music industry.
